my opinion on Stock 8 class

Post by Tim McDaniel »

As a Normal kid that grew up in the late 80's early 90s, i had a "Hot Rod" when I was in High School. My 71 Nova had a 350 engine with Forged flat top pistons, a 280 Magnum Comp cam, 750 Vacuum Secondary Holley and Double Hump heads. To me this is a SLIGHT upgrade over a stock V8 for late 60s and early 70's performance. Now as a 50 year old, i see all these "Factory Stock" class rules, 460 maximum lift if that, only open chambered heads allowed, wtf. There are aftermarket companies that make new heads using the old molds for the Double Hump heads, so I don't wanna hear any shit about how people can't find them, I've bought 3 pair off Marketplace the last year and only paid $150 for each set. Whatever, on a side note...

It seems that every car now either has a crate motor or such and such race engines logo on it. I guess this is where the "Built not bought" slogan came from. Well, I guess I'm just old school, I'm not one to pay someone to do something if I can do it myself. So, I may run around in the back with other do it yourselfer's, but there isn't gonna be any part of my car that I haven't done myself, from Installing the pistons and degreeing the cam, to setting up the gear, to welding the cage. For those that buy instead of build, my hats off to you, its just something that im not gonna do. I guess when it comes time that i have to install a crate engine, I'll hang it up and go back to tinkering with my Nova.

Here is what I believe for a stock v8 class:

1. No Limits on Safety, if you want to run x bracing (an x shape made out of steel under the car) then it shouldnt be illegal.
2. OK to run a 650 vacuum Secondary (dual line) carb or Center hung floats on fuel bowls, this keeps people from either having their car stall in the corners, or keeps them from having to rotate their carburetors 180 degrees, so that the throttle linkage has to pull forward to open the butterflies.
3. Double hump heads OR IMCA closed chambered Heads are legal.
4. Factory roof, Firewall and Floorpans are mandatory.
5. 8 inch rims, but 10 inch tires are allowed. (ran DOT 10.5 "Slicks" on my Nova in high school)
